Flea Market to Help Students Travel
For most, a trip to France is just a dream, but ASUCC officer Haley Stammen and TOP director Caroline Hopkins have set out to make those dreams a reality for the French 200 level students.
Stammen and Hopkins are organizing a fund raiser in the form of a flea market to support a spring break educational trip to France in the student lounge on Nov. 6 and 7 running from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
For several years, French 200 level courses have been under enrolled and in danger of being cut. This year the college cut the French 200 classes due to low enrollment, leaving current students who had already begun their two years of required foreign language unable to complete the second year. Due to this, World Language instructor Ni Aodogain presented an independent study option for those interested.
Currently, two students are taking the French 200 independent study and plan on attending the trip this spring break.
The opportunity to go to France is unique for UCC students and doesn’t present itself often.
The Princeton Review states that studying abroad is “the opportunity to reinvent yourself, to discover that you are capable of so much more than you ever thought possible…to collide with another culture, to work as a team, to overcome authentic challenges, to face questions of personal and cultural identity, to expand your view and understanding of the world, and, most of all, to discover who you are.”
Several faculty and staff have been contacted about donating and seem interested, says Stammen. Students or anyone else wanting to support the flea market can donate. Stammen is encouraging the UCC community to attend the flea market and help support the fundraising. Anyone wanting to help with a good cause while getting a bargain should look for the flea market flyers that will be posted on campus bulletin boards towards the end of the month. The ASUCC office is currently accepting donation for the flea market.
